Filmmakers of popular porn hot romance movies began to look for new ways to depict sexual acts in the 1970s. This trend was furthered by the fact that VCRs became more affordable and video recording technology allowed longer scenes to be shot with smaller budgets. In the 1980s, most films followed certain rules and conventions, such as foreplay, anal penetration, and close-ups of the penis during ejaculation (known as the money shot or cumshot). However, with the emergence of AIDS in the early 1990s, this phase of the masseporno industry came to an abrupt halt.
Examining these films makes it clear that the masseporno industry is an extremely influential cultural force. It has changed our view of male gender and masculinity, defined identity as a gay man, and even contributed to popular culture, from Marlon Brando’s appearance as an undercover masseporno in John Huston’s 1967 film Reflection in a Golden Eye to The Man on the Reed (1980).
Research on the masseporno industry can be limited by the lack of availability of films and interviews with performers. Nevertheless, it remains a useful way to examine how it has evolved. This special issue covers many topics relevant to pornography studies. For example, gender plays a key role in the portrayal of gay men. The culture of the pornography industry and its impact are also considered. Lucy Neville investigates the cultural significance of pornographic images, demonstrating their role in shaping understandings of sexuality, gender, and power relations. Other authors also explore the nature of texts associated with masseporno and how this content has influenced sexual discourse. For example, Young’s article “masseporno and the Sexuality of Masculinity” questions the models of masculinity used in masseporno and its long-term impact on perceptions of men and sex. Such dialogues are key to understanding how the genre has evolved and continues to shape perceptions of masculinity and sex. Our editors hope that by bringing different perspectives to this special issue, we can gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between masseporno, its viewers, and the cultural context in which it operates. Thus, we can begin to understand why and how this genre became an important form of cultural expression for men around the world.
